English
Language Skills
These
two courses are based on rules and principles of classical English. Students
gain a very strong grasp of grammar and writing. Vocabulary and content
are appropriate for grades 8-12. The courses accommodate accelerated learning;
students who need to recover from previous classroom failures or incompletes
may advance through the courses with minimum dependence on teachers. Essential
academic elements and skills are aligned with 8th and 9th grade standards
for Arizona and Texas. Each lesson begins with a poem or vignette about
a person who faced and overcame challenges of injury, abuse, danger, rejection
or failure. Grammar rules are imbedded in sentences or paragraphs extracted
from the vignettes, thus
students are engaged immediately. Students are introduced to diagramming
of simple, complex and compound sentences. Students gain a solid foundation
in writing skills and the elements of short stories and poetry. These
courses are also available in Talking Textbook format.
