Recovery Options

During my years as principle and superintendent, I have implemented the following options for recovering underperforming students:

  1. For the first six weeks of each school year, all teachers in grades 1-8 taught only phonics/reading and math skills expected for each grade level.
  2. Each teacher assembled individualized learning packets to address academic deficiencies in math, reading and spelling for all students who were deficient.
  3. A learning center was set up in an "extra" classroom in which underperforming and under-challenged students in grades 6-12 were allowed to transfer from regular classrooms based on standard hardback texts to a learning center where students were allowed to complete core subjects on guided, individualized curriculum as rapidly as desired or as slowly as needed to earn transcript credits.
  4. The entire school for grades 7-12 operated on a guided, individualized, learning program, allowing all students to complete courses according to personal initiative, provided AYP was maintained.
  5. We held weekly assemblies in which I addressed "Laws of Learning and Life" that helped at-risk, fatherless teens deal with domestic and personal issues (which were impacting student concentration and focus on academics).
  6. I Conducted staff development seminars/training to help teachers make the switch from teaching to providing guided, individualized learning.

I am available to help you implement any or all of the above as preferred. Numbers 1, 3, 5 and 6 are recommended as starters. Training for such a comprehensive package would require three to five days of staff in-service training...and should involve only teachers who want to be involved in your guided, individualized recovery program. Such a program could set your school apart as a model for recovering at-risk teenagers. Funds can be drawn from numerous budget categories: special education, ESL, Compensatory, Title funds, etc. Participating teachers may also use their Federal Tax Rebate allotment ($250.00) for teachers who spend their own money for classroom supplies.

Please feel free to contact me as you evaluate how Paradigm Accelerated Curriculum & System (PAC) can be of assistance to your teachers.
